Water Pump: Nissan RB PRP Electric
This document outlines the recommended procedure for installing an electric water pump supplied by Platinum Racing Products (PRP). Following the instructions precisely ensures optimal performance and longevity of the pump. Deviating from these recommendations, including using unapproved components or wiring setups, will void the warranty on the pump motor.
Pre-Installation Requirements
- Thermostat Removal: Prior to installation, the engine's thermostat must be removed to ensure proper water flow through the system.
- Power Supply: The water pump requires a fused power supply. All electrical connections must be properly protected with fuses to avoid electrical damage.
Wiring 16 AWG <1.5m. (Any greater distance requires thicker gauge wire)
Fuse rating 15 amps
- Coolant Flush: PRP recommends a system coolant flush prior to installation.
- Drive Belt: You will need a new shorter accessories belt. 4PK0760 for an RB26 for example.
- Cooling fan: You will need a thermo-fan setup since you are removing the water pump pulley.
DO NOT - run the pump dry as it will damage the seal
DO NOT - dismantle the pump or make modifications in anyway
DO NOT - use stop leak, crack repair or any other coolant additives
Motor Specifications
Voltage 5-15 Volts
Current Draw 5-10 Amps
Expected Duty Cycle 70%
Installation Guidelines
1. Electrical Wiring
- The power supply should be fused, protecting the motor from electrical surges or failures. 15 amp fused on a 12v power supply is recommended. Alternator voltage output is acceptable. 16 AWG wiring is recommended at a minimum.
- The pump must not be connected directly to the car's DC power system without fused protection.
2. Relay and Control Considerations
- Solid State Relays (SSR): The pump motor must be wired using solid-state relays. Traditional relays or direct DC power setups, even if paired with a temperature switch, are not suitable and will void the warranty. Equally, running the motor over 95% duty cycle will shorten its life and is not recommended.
You can find such relays like Haltech Here
Installation tips can be found on multiple websites, including Haltech's own info sheet.
- PWM Control or Aftermarket ECU: The electric water pump must be controlled via a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) controller or an aftermarket ECU via a PDM. This setup allows the pump to run at variable speeds, depending on engine demands.
- We have a map of duty cycles if you require one, so please contact us.
3. Engine Protection
- It is advisable to run engine protection failsafe in your ecu, or at very least an accurate temperature gauge combined with a warning device. Trusting the reliability and accuracy of a +20yr old OEM sensor/gauge combination is not recommended.
4. Pump Installation
- Follow the same guidelines as installing an OE water pump assembly.
Mandatory Inspection & Maintenance
- Regular inspections of the water pump system are mandatory every 6 months. During these inspections:
- Check for any signs of water ingress or leakage, particularly around the motor seal. Using waterless coolant will reduce the life of the seal to ~12 months after which it will not be covered under warranty.
- Ensure that the wiring and relays are free from corrosion or damage.
Warranty
- Pump Motor and Seal: 2-years from receipt, 1 year when using waterless coolant
- Billet Components: Lifetime warranty
- Terms: Return to PRP HQ for any repairs (including seals)
- Consequential Damages: PRP shall not be liable for any consequential, incidental, or indirect damages arising from improper installation, failure to follow recommended installation guidelines, or failure to implement proper engine protection measures (e.g., ECU engine overheat protection). By proceeding with installation, the customer acknowledges that PRP is not responsible for any resulting damages to the engine or other components.
The warranty is only valid when installed according to PRP's guidelines. Any unauthorized modifications or improper installations will result in a voided warranty. Additionally, please review the PRP warranty and refund terms and conditions which you agreed to when purchasing this product. They can be found HERE
